Samila 1994 by Wisuwat Pruksavanich
[2018]

Composer Note:

‘Samila’ is the name of the beach in Songkhla, my hometown. This piece encapsulates the essence of the city, blending its folk music, way of life, religions, and my personal experiences there in 1994. The idea is to create new music that combines the elements from Thai traditional music and Western music spontaneously. The piece shows the Thai traditional musical instruments, which are the Ranat Ayk, Chakhe, Khong Wong Yai, Khong Chai, Ching, and Klong Yao combined with the Western instruments throughout the music from the beginning until the end.

The piece was influenced by Thai traditional folk music from the southern part of Thailand, which is the location of Songkhla, where I was born and spent my childhood. The city contains many nationalities that are living together in the area, such as the Thai, Chinese and Malaysian. Thus, in this area, there are various religions, which are the result of the nationalities of the people that are living there, such as Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Every morning, the city resonates with the call to prayer from mosques around 5:00 to 6:00 am, followed by Buddhist monks walking the streets to collect alms. Sundays are marked by the ringing of church bells from Christian churches. These cultural and religious activities deeply influence the daily life of the city.

In addition to its blend of Thai and Western music, "Samila 1994" is influenced by traditional folk music from the region, including Manohra and Nang Talung. These influences are particularly express in Section E of the composition.
