Karn by Wisuwat Pruksavanich

Composer Note:
"Karn" is derived from the Thai word for "time." We hear time ticking from a watch with the familiar sound of "Tik-Tok." Regardless of where we go or what we do, this ticking sound remains constant. In the piece "Karn," this "Tik-Tok" sound is expressed through two notes that are a semitone apart. These two notes alternate with each other throughout the piece, appearing in different instruments and time signatures but always maintaining their pattern.
The soprano saxophone's melody in "Karn" is inspired by the Thai traditional music "Lao Duang Duen." This melody appears in the climax sections of the piece, both in the middle and at the end. Additionally, the piece features extended techniques, including multiphonics, to express the varied timbres of the soprano saxophone.
