Cha La Wan in the Wonderland
by Wisuwat Pruksavanich
[2018]
Composer Note:
Cha La Wan in the Wonderland is a metaphor for the combination of Eastern and Western music. As Cha La Wan is the name of a male crocodile in a Thai folktale “Kri-Thong” and the wonderland sounds like a place where people seek for fun and fantasy in Western culture.
The idea is to create new music which combines the elements from Thai traditional music and Western music spontaneously. The Thai traditional parts demonstrated through pentatonic scale and Thai traditional instruments in the background track, while Western elements are introduced through the inclusion of the saxophone extended techniques such as multiphonic and slap-tongue along with Western musical instrument accompaniment.
